Namamai Narmade! Narmadashtakam (नर्मदा अष्टकम): Narmada stream isn’t solely a stream however a logo of Santana Dharma and faith, it’s a life-long stream for the folks of the region, thus it’s terribly necessary to stay clean and uninterrupted water, it should be preserved.

In this Narmadashtakam it’s mentioned that we are able to solely hear the Sound of Immortality, flowing down as River-body, originating from the Matted Shankara, and filling the stream Banks,

Your Water, that is revered by the son of Rishi Mrikandu (The son of Rishi Mrikandu was Rishi Markandeya), Rishi Shaunaka, and also the enemies of the Asuras (i.e. Devas).

सबिन्दुसिन्धुसुस्खलत्तरङ्गभङ्गरञ्जितं
द्विषत्सु पापजातजातकारिवारिसंयुतम् ।
कृतान्तदूतकालभूतभीतिहारिवर्मदे
त्वदीयपादपङ्कजं नमामि देवि नर्मदे ॥ १ ॥

Transliteration
sabindusindhususkhalattaraṅgabhaṅgarañjitaṃ
dviṣatsu pāpajātajātakārivārisaṃyutam ।
kṛtāntadūtakālabhūtabhītihārivarmade
tvadīyapādapaṅkajaṃ namāmi devi narmade ॥ 1 ॥

English Meaning
Oh mother narmada devi, who protects, (in the end) the messengers of yama and (forever) removing the fear of the ghosts of tomorrow! i bow at your lotus feet with my water-particles, who create interesting views in the bouncing waves of the sea and destroy the sinful community of enemies, along with the pure waters.

त्वदम्बुलीनदीनमीनदिव्यसम्प्रदायकं
कलौ मलौघभारहारिसर्वतीर्थनायकम् ।
सुमच्छकच्छनक्रचक्रवाकचक्रशर्मदे
त्वदीयपादपङ्कजं नमामि देवि नर्मदे ॥ २ ॥

Transliteration
tvadambulīnadīnamīnadivyasampradāyakaṃ
kalau malaughabhārahārisarvatīrthanāyakam ।
sumacchakacchanakracakravākacakraśarmade
tvadīyapādapaṅkajaṃ namāmi devi narmade ॥ 2 ॥

English Meaning
Matsya (fish), kutch (tortoise), nakra (crocodile) etc., the water-life-community, and Chakravak (Chakai-Chakwa) etc. O bird-community, O Narmada ji! I bow to your lotus feet, who bestows the divine (heaven) status to the poor and sorrowful fishermen who are engrossed in your waters, and who defeats the burden of sinful priests of this Kali-yuga, and is the best among all pilgrimages (nets).

महागभीरनीरपूरपातधूतभूतलं
नमत्समस्तपातकारि दारितापदाचलम् ।
जगल्लये महाभये मृकण्डुसूनुहर्म्यदे
त्वदीयपादपङ्कजं नमामि देवि नर्मदे ॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration
mahāgabhīranīrapūrapātadhūtabhūtalaṃ
namatsamastapātakāri dāritāpadācalam ।
jagallaye mahābhaye mṛkaṇḍusūnuharmyade
tvadīyapādapaṅkajaṃ namāmi devi narmade ॥ 3 ॥

English Meaning
Oh narmada devi, who gives shelter to sage markandeya in the catastrophe of the great terrible world! i bow to your watery feet – the lotus, who washes away the sins of the earth’s surface by the flow of extremely severe waters, and destroys all the evils and the mountains of troubles with your effusive words.

गतं तदैव मे भयं त्वदम्बु वीक्षितं यदा
मृकण्डुसूनुशौनकासुरारिसेवितं सदा ।
पुनर्भवाब्धिजन्मसम्भवाब्धिदुःखवर्मदे
त्वदीयपादपङ्कजं नमामि देवि नर्मदे ॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration
gataṃ tadaiva me bhayaṃ tvadambu vīkṣitaṃ yadā
mṛkaṇḍusūnuśaunakāsurārisevitaṃ sadā ।
punarbhavābdhijanmasambhavābdhiduḥkhavarmade
tvadīyapādapaṅkajaṃ namāmi devi narmade ॥ 4 ॥

English Meaning
Markandeya, saunaka, and the gods were consumed continuously, at the same time when i saw your water, my birth-death-form sorrow and all the fears arising in the world-ocean ran away. O Narmada ji, who liberates you from the sorrows of the ocean of the world! I bow to your lotus feet.

alakṣyalakṣakinnarāmarāsurādipūjitaṃ
sulakṣanīratīradhīrapakṣilakṣakūjitam ।
vasiṣṭhaśiṣṭapippalādikardamādiśarmade
tvadīyapādapaṅkajaṃ namāmi devi narmade ॥ 5 ॥

English Meaning
Oh mother narmada devi, who gives happiness to vasistha rishi, the best pipplad rishi, and kardam etc. Worshiped by millions of invisible eunuchs (devyoni specials), deities, and humans, and directly hummed (kilts) by millions of birds residing on the banks of your waters, bowing at your lotus feet.

रवीन्दुरन्तिदेवदेवराजकर्मशर्मदे

sanatkumāranāciketakaśyapātriṣaṭpadai-
rdhṛtaṃ svakīyamānaseṣu nāradādiṣaṭpadaiḥ ।
ravīndurantidevadevarājakarmaśarmade
tvadīyapādapaṅkajaṃ namāmi devi narmade ॥ 6 ॥

English Meaning
Ohh mother narmada ji, who gives happiness to the gods sun, moon, ravintadeva and indra! I bow again and again to your lotus feet like sanatkumar nachiket, kasyapa, aatri and nardad rishi roop who were imbued in their minds by the illusionists.

ततस्तु जीवजन्तुतन्तुभुक्तिमुक्तिदायकम् ।
विरिञ्चिविष्णुशङ्करस्वकीयधामवर्मदे

Transliteration
alakṣalakṣalakṣapāpalakṣasārasāyudhaṃ
tatastu jīvajantutantubhuktimuktidāyakam ।
viriñciviṣṇuśaṅkarasvakīyadhāmavarmade
tvadīyapādapaṅkajaṃ namāmi devi narmade ॥ 7 ॥

English Meaning
Meaning :- oh mother narmada devi, brahma, vishnu, and the one who gives them their respective positions (strength and place)! whose mind does not even reach to count, like a powerful weapon (sharp sword) to destroy such innumerable sins, and the living beings (big and big creatures) living on your banks, jantu (small beings) tantu (lata-virudh) i.e. I bow to your lotus feet, who give the happiness of this world and the happiness of the hereafter (liberation) to all living beings.

किरातसूतबाडवेषु पण्डिते शठे नटे ।
दुरन्तपापतापहारि सर्वजन्तुशर्मदे
त्वदीयपादपङ्कजं नमामि देवि नर्मदे ॥ ८ ॥

Transliteration
aho dhṛtaṃ svanaṃ śrutaṃ maheśakeśajātaṭe
kirātasūtabāḍaveṣu paṇḍite śaṭhe naṭe ।
durantapāpatāpahāri sarvajantuśarmade
tvadīyapādapaṅkajaṃ namāmi devi narmade ॥ 8 ॥

English Meaning
Meaning :- ah! born from the hairs of shankar ji, on the bank of reva ji, i heard the word ‘kalkal’, blissful like nectar, the giver of happiness to the creatures of all castes, o mother narmada ji! i bow to your lotus feet like kirat (bhil), soot (bhat), badav (brahmin), pandit (scholar), shatha (rascal) and nat, who take away the heat of their infinite sinews.

इदं तु नर्मदाष्टकं त्रिकालमेव ये सदा
पठन्ति ते निरन्तरं न यान्ति दुर्गतिं कदा ।
सुलभ्य देहदुर्लभं महेशधामगौरवं
पुनर्भवा नरा न वै विलोकयन्ति रौरवम् ॥ ९ ॥

Transliteration
idaṃ tu narmadāṣṭakaṃ trikālameva ye sadā
paṭhanti te nirantaraṃ na yānti durgatiṃ kadā ।
sulabhya dehadurlabhaṃ maheśadhāmagauravaṃ
punarbhavā narā na vai vilokayanti rauravam ॥ 9 ॥

English Meaning
Meaning :- those who recite this narmadashtakam every day for three days (morning, evening, midday), they never get into misfortune, and by holding such a beautiful body rare to other worlds, they go to shivlok. and find happiness in this world and never see the Rauravadis from the bondage of rebirth and never see the hells.
